Smith Falls Spring Fling Running Thing 2014
Since the inaugural race in 2012, the Smiths Falls Spring Fling Running Thing has become a “must run” event for Duncan and I. Living in Almonte, we often joke “every race is a destination race”. Sure, we travel to larger events, yet they are no where near as welcoming, friendly or community driven. You see, this race is staged to benefit the Smith Falls Community Hospital Foundation, along with any immediate community needs. If you’ve read my previous race reports, you will undoubtedly recall how this race has helped a family and now the Rink of Dreams project.
Typically run along the Cataraqui Trail, the delayed spring thaw left the byway under snow. Race director, Corey Turnbull, and his incredible team worked diligently with the Town, the Smith Falls Hospital, and the race insurance provider to relocate. The revised route was on quiet rural roads.
After a winter spent in running snowshoes, Duncan and I agreed to stick with our “tune up” strategy. The Spring Fling has always been a no stress race for us. We test out new shoes, new gear, and take the opportunity to chat with fellow runners after months of solitary, hibernation style running. We both come away feeling better about the upcoming race season.
